THE COURIER

who is he?

the courier is the protagonist of the hit game fallout new vegas in the fallout series. the courier's decisions are impacted by the player's dialogue choices and alliances throughout the game. good impactful decisions generate good karma, bad impactful decisions generate bad karma, and a balance of the two maintains a state of neutral karma. there are several major alliances the courier can have throughout the game: with the new california republic, caesar's legion, mr. house, or complete and total independence (technically an alliance with total freedom.) these three factions are fighting over control over the mojave desert and the remains of their region after the nuclear bombs dropped.

the endings of the game culminate in the major final event of the game, the battle of hoover dam. the hoover dam has significant tactical importance to all three groups fighting for control over the mojave desert, as it is a major source of power and water for the entire mojave desert: taking control of it implies control over the entire region, as the region depends on it.

here are some different outcomes that the courier can have at the battle of hoover dam depending on who they help:

good karma

  • NCR alliance: the courier is rewarded for his efforts and the NCR annexes the mojave desert
  • caesar's legion alliance, caesar lives: the courier is rewarded for his efforts with a gold coin and has a reputation for being fair and just
  • caesar's legion alliance, caesar dies: same as above, but iirc the coin is given by lucius instead (note that this ending is only achievable with a certain speech stat)
  • mr. house alliance: the courier is rewarded with luxury and favors from house for the rest of his life and lives in complete comfort with approval and pride from house. he maintains the stability of new vegas and the mojave for decades, despite not being free under house's tyranny.
  • independence: he forces all three regions to cease their influence over the mojave and maintains a free anarchy-adjacent wasteland with honor from all of the people.

neutral karma

  • NCR alliance: the courier is still rewarded for his efforts, same as good karma, but with suspicion and wariness for their morally ambiguous actions
  • caesar's legion alliance, caesar lives: the courier is described as being a 'mercenary at heart' and is given the golden coin for his loyalty to the legion
  • caesar's legion alliance, caesar dies: same as above
  • mr. house alliance: same as good karma, but house does not have any pride in him whatsoever and does it out of obligation and gratitude. again, the mojave is NOT FREE
  • independence: although the courier is morally ambiguous he DID kick all three groups out of the mojave so everyone kind of thinks hes cool

bad karma

  • NCR alliance: NCR takes over the wasteland, the courier is still rewarded for his efforts despite being a violent jackass
  • caesar's legion alliance, caesar lives: the courier's brutality and mercilessness allows him to conquer the hoover dam with the legion. he is given the golden coin for his ruthlessness
  • caesar's legion alliance, caesar dies: same as above
  • mr. house alliance: house is terrified of the courier despite the courier's alignment with him and gives him gifts and a life of luxury to keep him on his side
  • independence: the courier frees everyone out of a desire for total chaos. like a dick
  • the courier is given his iconic name primarily because of his purpose: to carry packages across the mojave wasteland and other regions for different groups. he remains primarily independent before the events of the main story, but the contract that spurs on the events of the story have him carrying out a delivery for the mojave express, backed by the new california republic in an effort to expand their influence across the eastern section of the mojave desert. on the way to deliver this package (containing the platinum chip) he is ambushed by benny and the package is stolen from him. benny and the khans try to murder him, but he is dug out of his grave and brought back to life by doc mitchell and victor, his securitron.

although he is not given much of a backstory, we know he feels some sense of homelessness or home-seeking and is relatively clueless about a lot of things that occur in the mojave wasteland or customs and culture, which makes me extremely fond of him. here are things the courier knows absolute jack shit nothing about:

here is a list of things the courier is familiar with, which is probably similarly if not more bizarre.

the courier has been through... so many things. he once lost his brain, heart, and spine in the 'old world blues' DLC after being experimented on by the think tank. this accounts for a lot of his behavior, including the fact that he apparently has unique lesions from being shot twice in the head. he aurafarms almost constantly and has the stupidest dialogue options known to man. hes sassy. he kills people. he is ruthless and also fair and just. he is whatever the player wants him to be and also just some traveling jackass who knows random shit and has a special interest in machining.

in short he is stupid and i love him he has 12 billion diseases ever
